Almost two springs ago, we were walking around New York City ahead of a photoshoot, noticing just how many trench coats we were seeing in so many different incarnations. We were happy to see the silhouette return, but because FLAX is rooted in classic design, we’re never quick to jump on a trend. Still, we filed the idea away.
Some time later, we began working on early prototypes — not a trend-driven trench, but one done our way. Classic, timeless, and built to last. It was a lot of fabric, and the price point felt higher than what many of our stores might initially commit to, so we set it aside for another day. Quite literally, it lived in my closet for a while.
Then I wore it.
When photos of the trench started appearing on social media, customers began asking about it almost immediately. That curiosity confirmed what we were already starting to feel. I handed over my sample, and it went back to Chicago for fittings, tweaks, and thoughtful edits — the kind that only come from wearing a piece, living in it, and listening closely.
That’s how Encore was shaped. Slowly, intentionally, and with a lot of care.
The Encore Trench is rooted in a classic trench silhouette, interpreted through the FLAX lens. It’s intentionally offered in Natural medium-weight linen only — a decision our team made because the fabric, color, and structure felt inseparable. Natural allows the texture of the linen to shine, giving the coat depth and warmth without heaviness.
The shape is clean and timeless, with a wide lapel that frames the neckline beautifully and gives the coat a sense of presence without feeling oversized. Deep pockets add both function and ease — this is a piece meant to be worn, lived in, and reached for often.

One of my favorite details is the button-tab sleeve, which allows the sleeves to be rolled and secured into a cuff. It adds flexibility and a subtle point of interest, whether styled casually or worn as a more polished layer.
Encore is about balance. As a team, we’re always listening to the silhouettes you return to and can’t imagine living without, while also allowing space for new designs that feel meaningful and considered. Some pieces feel like old friends. Others are just beginning their story.
For us, that’s the heart of FLAX — honoring where we’ve been, listening closely to the people who wear our clothes, and creating thoughtful, enduring pieces for the seasons ahead.
