Staying Cool in Linen: A Love Letter to Natural Fibers

Staying Cool in Linen: A Love Letter to Natural Fibers

When August rolls in with its sticky mornings and steamy afternoons, the last thing I want is to feel restricted by my clothing. I want to be cool, comfortable, and covered when I need to be, without having to think too hard about it. That’s where linen comes in. It breathes, it drapes, it moves with me. And when I don’t want to wear much at all? It still manages to feel like just enough.

That’s why we brought back the Sun Short this season - an easy Flood fit turned short, available in Black and Natural. It’s simple, breezy, and goes with everything. On days when it’s just too hot to think, I grab a pair of Sun Shorts, a tank, and feel instantly more like myself.

But linen isn’t just about shorts and tanks, it’s about layering lightly. I like pieces that give me options without adding bulk or heat. We have so many great sleeveless and short-sleeved tops that act as the perfect base layer. And when I want to throw something on over them (whether for coverage, polish, or a bit of AC chill) I turn to:

•    The Cropped Cardigan: short, easy, and just enough to take the edge off when going indoors.
•    The Cute Cardigan: also cropped but buttons all the way down, so it can double as a blouse or be worn open like a jacket.
•    The Gotcha Blouse: part shirt, part layer, part cover-up. This one works over everything from camis to swimsuits and has become a year-round favorite.

I also love flowy, full-length pants in this heat, so the Flat Iron Pant is perfect - wide leg, roomy, and super comfortable with its cotton knit waistband and drawstring. It’s the kind of pant that I can wear all day and still want to keep on when I get home.

When I am out on the golf course, where comfort and polish need to go hand-in-hand, I reach for easy-fitting crops like the Kate Pant or Flattering Crop, or a relaxed style like the Floods or Tapered Pant. For tops, my go to is the Sleeveless Shirt or some variation on a button-down collared shirt without a sleeve. Styles like this let me swing comfortably and feel pulled together from the first hole to the last and go from course to clubhouse, all while staying cool.

Finally, when it comes to summer evenings—especially concerts in the park or outdoor events—our dresses shine. The Café Dress and Calypso Dress both offer generous length so I can sit cross-legged in the grass or lean back in a folding chair without worry. They breathe beautifully, look elegant, and layer easily if the breeze picks up after sunset.

August is all about ease, comfort, and flexibility. Linen gives me room to move, keeps me cool, and makes me feel just a little more pulled together, even when the heat is relentless. Whether I’m at work, walking to the brook at camp, or playing nine holes, I’ll be wearing FLAX. And chances are, I won’t be the only one.
