The Beauty of Bias
At FLAX, we pride ourselves on offering a variety of styles and fits to ensure inclusivity in our designs. We understand that not every style will be everyone's favorite, but our goal is to create collections that appeal to a wide range of shapes and proportions. Our collections feature an array of options: short pants, tanks, ¾ length sleeve pullovers, pieces that fit like our Floods, and dresses of varying lengths and sleeve styles. We also include cropped, boxy tops, button-downs for layering, and long pants to ensure there's something for everyone.
Each year, we love to include at least one or two pieces that are cut on the bias or feature bias details. Cutting fabric on the bias means turning the fabric diagonally before cutting. This technique enhances the natural drape and movement of linen, making these pieces particularly flattering on all body types. Bias-cut linen garments mold to the wearer's shape, accentuating curves or creating the illusion of curves, resulting in a universally flattering silhouette. It's a love story to the natural beauty of all body shapes and sizes.
Some familiar FLAX classics that feature bias cuts, either in part or whole, include:
- Bias Vee: A v-neck tank that drapes beautifully along the bust and belly.
- Bias Cami, Slip, and Slip Dress: These styles come with adjustable straps and side slits, making them perfect for layering or wearing on their own.
- Bias Back Shirt: A recent feature with a straight grain front and a back panel cut on the bias, providing swing and shape over the back and hip area.
These styles and more are beloved favorites that make frequent appearances in our collections. Be sure to watch out for your next favorite bias piece, the Beneficial Blouse in Core Companions. The bias nature in all elements of this top makes for a wonderfully shaped garment that doesn’t overwhelm the frame but doesn’t feel fitted either.
We recommend ordering the same size in bias pieces as you would in a straight grain style but measuring bias is a little unique too. Below are some tips for measuring bias styles to assure a good fit:
- Lay the garment flat and gently stretch it to measure across the hip or bust first.
- Measure the length.
